There is a precise discipline to a life well-lived, a rhythm that connects the sprawling landscape of global service to the quiet comfort of a living room floor. In May 2026, surrounded by the quiet desert majesty of the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, family, friends, and fellow service members gathered to lay to rest a man who mastered that rhythm: Donald “Don,” a retired U.S. Army Veteran who dedicated 22 years of his life to the defense of his country.

Don’s military career was defined by high-stakes responsibility and absolute trust. Among his most notable assignments, he served as a trusted military aide to General Alexander Haig. Operating at the highest levels of military command requires an impeccable eye for detail, unshakeable calm under pressure, and a deep understanding of organizational logistics—traits that Don carried with him through every subsequent chapter of his life.

His 22-year journey with the Army took him across continents and deeply into the strategic heart of the Cold War era. His service ribbons represented years of dedication across diverse postings:

  • The Frontlines of NATO: Serving overseas in Turkey, Italy, and Belgium, Don navigated the complex administrative and operational landscapes of international diplomacy and forward defense.
  • The Home Front: Bringing that wealth of global experience back to the States, he completed vital stateside service at Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg), North Carolina.

Yet, for all the gravity of his global service, Don’s heart belonged to his family. He understood that the best way to balance the rigid structure of military life was with the joyful focus of play. He transformed his downtime into lasting memories for his children, cultivating a home filled with creativity and strategic fun. He was a passionate enthusiast of electric trains, carefully assembling miniature worlds that sparked a sense of wonder in his kids. On quieter afternoons, he would sit across from them over a checkerboard, teaching them the quiet strategy, patience, and simple joy of a classic board game.

After hanging up his uniform, Don’t commitment to public service never wavered. He transitioned his formidable logistical and organizational skills to the civilian sector, spending over a decade as an administrative professional for the Department of Energy. There, he played a critical role in the administrative oversight of the landmark Yucca Mountain science and repository studies.

Don’s sharp mind and meticulous eye also made him a natural creative collaborator. For years, he partnered with his friend Dave, lending his talents to photography and video production, database cataloging, and complex writing assignments. He was uniquely at home in this visual medium; Don belonged to a vibrant, tight-knit community of friends and family who worked as photography and video professionals within the government, particularly at the historic Nevada Test Site. Together, they formed a unique fraternity of chroniclers, documenting the intersection of science, history, and national security in the Nevada desert.

From the halls of NATO command to the intricate tracks of his model trains, Don lived a life of purpose, precision, and profound dedication. As the bugle played Taps over the desert expanse of Boulder City, it honored a man who served his country with distinction, supported his community with expertise, and loved his family above all else.

Rest in Peace, Soldier. Your watch is complete
